Early Life :
Born in the Holloway / Tufnell Park area to Alfred Manning and Frances Maria (Fanny) Bailey on 9th December 1880 and baptised 27th March 1881. Resident here until at least 1886 when his sister Helen Frances was born.He married Elsie Beatrice Allen on 20th April 1911 at Holy Trinity Church in Wimbledon. The pair are recorded as living together at 78a Merton Road, Wimbledon.

2/1st Battalion Formed at Finsbury on 2 September 1914. Moved to Belhus Park, going on in November to Blackheath, February 1915 to the Tower of London, August to Richmond Park, November to Wimbledon, January 1916 to Orpington, July to Tadworth (Surrey), and returned to Tower in September 1916. 3 October 1916 : landed at Le Havre and placed under command of 22nd Brigade in 7th Division. November 1917 : moved with Division to Italy. |

9 April - 16 June 1917. The Arras Offensive consisted of a series of linked attacks starting with the Anglo Canadian assault on the dominant Vimy Ridge feature through the battles in the Scarpe River valley and up to the assaults on the Hindenburg line in the summer of 1917.
