Unit / Ship / Est.: 4th Battalion The Essex Regiment 

1/4th Battalion August 1914 : in Brentwood. Part of Essex Brigade in East Anglian Division. Moved to Norwich in late 1914 and on to Colchester in April 1915. May 1915 : formation became 161st Brigade in 54th (East Anglian) Division. Moved late in the month to St Albans. 21 July 1915 : sailed from Devonport for Gallipoli, going via Lemnos. Landed at Suvla bay 12 August 1915. 4 December 1915 : evacuated from Gallipoli and moved to Mudros, going on to Alexandria 17 December 1915. Remained in Egypt/Palestine theatre thereafter.

Action : Palestine 

Palestine is a generic term to cover actions in the region now consisting of Sinai, Israel, Jordan, Syria and Aden and involved operations against the Turks. Once the security of the Suez Canal was assured in 1915 the focus shifted to the area now within the post 1967 borders of Israel. In 1917 there were three battles at Gaza, which enabled the capture of Jerusalem in December. In 1918 the campaign continued north into the Jordan Valley then towards Damascus. The Armistice with Turkey was signed on the 31st October 1918.

CLAPHAM, Barnard Aubrey, Lieutenant, 1/4 Essex Regiment. 4th son of the late Alfred Henry Clapham, of Thurlby, Woodford Bridge, Essex. Born Buckhurst Hill Essex 1878 ; Educated Haileybury, and Worcester College. Oxford: He was a Solicitor and joined the Public Schools Battn. of the Middlesex Regiment on the outbreak of war in Aug. 1914. He obtained a Commission in the Essex Regt on 29 Oct 1914. He was for a time in command of the 2/4th Battalion in England holding the rank of Captain. He served with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force in Egypt and Palestine from March, 1916, and died at a Field Ambulance 27 March, 1917, from wounds received in action at the Battle of Gaza the previous day. The Masonic Roll of Honour 1921 lists him in error as a Captain.
