7th (Service) Battalion Formed at Berwick-on-Tweed in September 1914 as part of K2 and attached to 46th Brigade in 15th (Scottish) Division. Moved to Bordon and in February 1915 went into billets at Winchester. Moved to Park House and Chisledon Camps (Salisbury Plain) in April 1915. Landed at Boulogne 10 July 1917. 28 May 1916 : in Bethune, merged with 8th Bn to form 7/8th. |

The official dates cover the period from 15th June 1915 to 8th August 1915. This is the period on the Western Front following the piecemeal engagements North of the La Bassee canal at Aubers Ridge, Festubert & Givenchy but before the Battle of Loos, the largest Western Front battle of 1915.

FORBES, Gordon Stewart Drummond Major CMG DSO 7th King's Own Scottish Borderers Died of Wounds age 48 on 21st July 1915. Son of Gen Sir John Forbes GCB, Inverernan, Strathdon & the late Lady Forbes (nee Drummond). Buried in the Fouquieres Churchyard Extension Fr 0109 Plot I Grave 13 Commemorated on the Strathdon Strathdon Parish War Memorial, Bellabeg. He lived in Southern Rhodesia and in March 1914 was elected to the Rhodesia Legislative Council. The Legislative Council had resolved in 1913 that it should have twelve elected members, together with six members nominated by the British South Africa Company, and the Administrator of Southern Rhodesia. To be eligible for registration as an elector, the voter had to be a British subject by birth or naturalization, male, over the age of 21, and to have lived in Southern Rhodesia for six months continuously, as before. Bulawayo South District Electorate: 887 according to the Rhodesia Herald, 885 according to the Bulawayo Chronicle; Turnout: 58.5% or 58.6%. Gordon Stewart Drummond Forbes polled 275 votes as the incumbent and Robert Alexander Fletcher 244 votes. Clearly he hastened to return to Britain on the outbreak of war.
