Early Life :
Born 1856, the son of John George and Margaret Elizabeth Bakerwhen living at 162, Evelyn Street, Deptford. He was baptised on 10th August 1856.By 1871, the family had moved to 1 Belle Vue Villas, Portsmouth. Older brother, Thomas (25) was resident with no occupation, and John is shown, aged 14, as a scholar.
Married Catherine Mary Worth on the 15th March 1880 at St. Mary's Church, Chatham, Kent.

By the time of the outbreak of the war, John was retired as an Engineer Captain. He is included in the Masonic Roll of Honour, so it can only be assumed at this stage that his vast experience in the Royal Navy had a part to play in the Great War and that whilst discharging those duties, died in service.
