Detail :
CWGC shows that Joseph was a victim of action on the 24th March 1916 aboard the S.S. "Trewyn" (St. Ives). According to Great War Forum, it is suggested that the most likely reason this ship was lost "...after passing Gibraltar on 25th March 1916, probably due to weather conditions, Atlantic Ocean, carrying ore from Algiers to Middlesbrough, owned by Hain, Edward & Son - St Ives and managed by Hain Steamship Co Ltd. However, on the same page and looking at UBoat.net, there is a further suggestion that 6 days later U-28 torpedoed the ship.
Whatever the cause, 23 crew were apparently lost (at least 19 are recorded on the Tower Hill Memorial including Joseph).
News Article "CARDIFF STEAMER OVERDUE - Grave fears are entertained as to the fate of the well-known Cardiff trader the steamship Trewyn, owned by the Hain Steamship Company (Limited), and registered at St. Ives. The steamer, which had a local crew, passed Gibraltar on March 25 for Middlesborough, and has not been heard of. Some wreckage was , however, discovered off Ushant. It was hoped that the crew had been picked up by an outward bound vessel, but now that five weeks have passed without news anxiety is felt. [The Trewyn was a steamer of 3,084 tons gross, built at South Shields in 1903.]"
