Action : France & Flanders |
France & Flanders covers all the dates and corresponding locations which are outside the official battle nomenclature dates on the Western Front. Therefore the actions in which these men died could be considered 'normal' trench duty - the daily attrition losses which were an everyday fact of duty on the Western Front.
Detail :
James Stanley HAMPSON, 2.Lieutenant, 1/4 The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment James HAMPSON was thought to have been killed in action during an attack in the Givenchy sector on the 21st May 1918 aged 36 and is buried in Houchin British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France, Grave Reference I.B.8 Some records state that he was killed whilst the Regiment was 'at rest' their billets being shelled. We believe on balance that this is more likely. The History of the regiment tells us In our rest billets at VAUDRICOURT we went through the usual training and bathing routine until the 20th, when we relieved the 1/7th King's Liverpool Regiment in the GIVENCHY left sector. During the rest Second Lieutenant Hampson was killed and four men wounded. Source; History of 1/4 LNL
