Family :
Son of James Hartnoll of Ganwick, Barnet and loved at Well Place, Ipsden, Oxon.Hartnoll married Winifred Bardsley Blackett, daughter of the late Rev. W. R, Blackitt of Islip, Oxford, in 1903, and they had a son and a daughter.
Education & Career :
Hartnoll went to Harrow before going up to Univ to read law, taking his BA in 1904.
He was called to the Bar by the Inner Temple in 1905, but became a farmer in Oxfordshire.

Egypt was the base for the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force which was engaged in the region, primarily against the Turks. In the early stages of the war Egypt was threatened by Turkish advances towards Suez which were defeated and the Turks retreated to Palestine. Most of the effort of the MEF was thereafter directed towards operations in Palestine and Syria. Many of those buried and commemorated in Egypt succumbed to wounds, disease or were army victims of naval actions in the region.
He was gazetted Captain in June, 1917. He served in Egypt, at Aden, and finally on the Palestine Front. He died on May 20th, 1917, of enteric fever, at El Kantara, Egypt.
He was the last pre-war officer to serve with the unit.
