Family :
Son of the Army Officer Wm. Edward & Lydia Hilliard of St Peter Port. Born at Guernsey. He attended Downing College, Cambridge in 1906 following an apprenticeship with Great Western Railways. According to "Downing", he appears in 1908 as an Assistant Maintenance Engineer for the Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway.Service Life:

Accidents were a minor factor in the casualty list. Our definition is deaths resulting from activities that were not directly associated with 'active service'. We have excluded Naval Accidents which are seperately identified because of their numbers and impact. Many accidents involved the aviators, operating at the the limits of technology.
Detail :
At the outbreak of war he returned to the UK in November of 1914, joining the Royal Naval Air Service as a Flight Sub-Lieutenant (probationary) on 4th January 1915 and qualified to fly a Grahame-White biplane at Hendon the following month.
Accidentally killed during a night landing, in a field near Bacton, after an Anti-Zeppelin Patrol in a BE2c 990. The undercarriage collapsed on landing and the bombs exploded, blowing the aircraft to pieces. He had gained his Aeronautical Certificate no. 1079 on the 12th February 1915 in a Grahame- White Biplane at the Grahame-White School, Hendon. He was a Steward in his Lodge.
