He joined Zetland Lodge No. 1157 in Alexandria twice. Firstly on 10th November 1892 (but in the notes it mentions "not a member See pa per dated 27.3.02 but a payment for dues had been received). Nothing is recorded around 1902, so we next see him on the 14th January 1913 from St. Botolph's Lodge No.588, but he the resigned 31st December 1917. He must have had a long association with Zetland as they performed the Ceremony of Raising for him.
An image of a postcard provided by Simon Last of Charnwood Genealogy shows, on the reversed side, the following words: "Brother William Carleton Barrett" Captain in Merchant Service. Initiated in St. Botolph's Lodge 10th Octr. 1892. Drowned 22 May 1917. Boat torpedoed by German submarin in Channel during Great War 1914-18. The only Brother lost by St. Botolph's Lodge 588"
