HORWOOD, Ewart Gladstone, Private, 1/Newfoundland Regiment This chap offers a mystery. He is listed in the 1921 Roll of Honour as a member of St John's Lodge No 579 in Newfoundland. His lodge record confirms that he was initiated on 7th July 1916 at the age of 18. Usually 21 is the minimum age at which one can become a freemason unless there is a family connection (i.e. father) in the lodge or if there are other special circumstances. There is no doubt that during the war a number of under age members were initiated, the special circumstances being imminent despatch overseas. He did not complete the ceremonies of Passing and Raising. The lodge record also suggests that he was killed on 22nd January 1917. There is no CWGC record for a Ewart Gladstone HORWOOD.
