Detail :
2nd Mate Certificate of Competency (Foreign Going Ship) 24th March 1902. Created at Temporary Sub-Lieut, recorded in The Globe 8th June and recorded in the London Gazette 15th June 1915.
The SS Dauntless was carrying coal from Newcastle to Bayonne when it was stopped and sunk by gunnery, 10 miles off Pointe-de-la-Coubre, Gironde by UB-39 commanded by Heinrich Kuestner, with 15 casualties.
A commemoration is made at the family grave in St. Lawrence, Jersey. Translated from French:
"Frank Houelbecq dies on the 19th day of November 1892 at the age of 48 years
as also of John Chevalier son of the aforesaid deceased on November 25, 1883 at the age of 11 years
Also Francis William son of the above-mentioned who lost his life at sea because of a German submarine on February 4, 1917, in his 36th year
Also from Jane Mary Pirouet widow of Frank Houelbecq deceased on January 28, 1930 in his 85th year."
