Humphrys was a stationer by trade in Devonport, before a brief stint in Stevenage as a bookseller before he emigrated to South Africa. He moved to Kimberley, becoming a manager there before being commissioned into the Kimberley Regt.

At the start of the war it was important to bring Regular Battalions back from their 'Imperial Policing' role in India and the FarEast. These troops were replaced by Territorial and other Garisson troops.

Edward Thomas Humphrys was initiated into the Lodge of Friendship No. 202 in his native Devonport on 25 September 1884. He was passed and raised the same year.
He joined Dacre Lodge No. 2086 in Stevenage in 1893 when he moved temporarily to the area and became a bookselle, but he very soon moved to Kimbereley in South Africa as a mine manager.
In Kimberley he joined first Charles Warren Lodge No. 1832, then Cosmopolitan Lodge No. 1409, Kimberley and then Richard Giddy Lodge No. 1574. During tis time he had become an Officer in the Kimberley Regt and risen to the rank of Captain and Adjutant.
