In 1915, at the time of joining the Army he was resident at 10 Billingham Avenue, Norton-on-Sea (Ethel may have moved to 3 The Green, Billingham, Stockton-On-Tees).

He was initially served a period of 1 year 286 days doing home service (14 Company, 3 Company and the RGA AAT Depot), before embarking to France (B.E.F) on 13th September 1917. He came back from overseas service and spent another 29 days on home service before being discharged to (Class "Z") Army Reserve.
