William is listed as a 35 year old civil engineer in 1912 when initiated into Neptune Lodge No. 1264 at Liverpool. From the very start of the war, in the 1914 column he is noted to have been a "Prisoner of War," the status of which does not change for the entire period until 1920 when he is "presumed dead."
