Evening Despatch & Birmingham Daily Gazette 8th September 1915 - DEATH OF CAPT. KATON - POPULAR OFFICER AT LICHFIELD AND WALSALL - "The death occured at Lichfield yesterday of Captain A.R. Katon, of the 8th (Service) Battalion South Staffs. Regiment. He spent nearly twenty years in the ranks and in 1900 was appointed sergeant-major of the 4th (Special Reserve) Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment, with which he served in the South African War, and for which he gained the King's Medal. After completing his service with th 4th North Staffordshires, he was appointed quartermaster of a Leicester battalion of Territorials, with the honorary rank of lieutenant. At the outbreak of the present war he acted for a time as recruiting officer at Walsall, where he was very popular, and later was called to active service with the South Staffordshire Regiment.
Captain Katon, who recently underwent an operation at Birmingham, was an ardent Freemason and Worshipful Master of the Lichfield Lodge in 1908."
Walsall Advertiser 11 September 1915 - Death of Capt. A.R. Katon - Popular Lichfield Officer who had risen from the ranks - "It is with much regret we announce the death after a painful illness of Capt. Arthur Robert Katon, of the 8th (Service) Batt. South Staffs. Regt. which occurred on Monday evening. Some few months ago the deceased officer was compelled to relinquish his military duties owing to ill-health, and quite recently he underwent a serious operation in a nursing home at Birmingham, from which he never fully recovered. Captain Katon, who was only fifty years of age, had risen from the ranks, and prior to his last illness he was a most zealous and active officer." ... ... "About two years ago he undertook the management of the Anglesey Hotel, for the Lichfield Brewery Co., Ltd., but at the outbreak of war he again offered his services to the war office and for a time acted as recruiting officer at Walsall, where he was very popular. In November last he was called to active service with the 8th Service Battalion South Staffs Regt., commanded by Lieut-Col G. N. Going, a well-known officer of the Lichfield Garrison, and in June this year he was promoted to Captain. Deceased was an ardent Freemason and was Worshipful Master of St. John;s Lodge (No. 1039) in 1908, while prior to the war he was a member of the Lichfield Bowling Club. MILITARY FUNERAL - Deceased's body was laid to rest yesterday (Friday) in St. Michael's Churchyard, with full military honours."
