Kennard went to Uppingham before leaving in December 1898 and joining the Militia.
He was a member of the MCC and a keen huntsman and point-to-point jockey.

Moved with Brigade to France as part of 2nd Indian Cavalry Division, landed Marseilles December 1914. 15 September 1915 : transferred with brigade to 2nd Indian Cavalry Division. July 1916 : moved with Brigade to Mesopotamia and came under orders of 7th Indian Cavalry Brigade. |

Natural causes is attributed those deaths due to causes that were not directly associated with the war. Included in this are wartime deaths resulting from, for example, theSpanish Influenza pandemic and its associated pneumonia problems and other attributions such as age and exhaustion. It also groups those who through Post Traumatic Stress committed suicide as a result of their experiences.
He saw active service in South Africa from 1899 to 1902, during which he was present in operations in the Transvaal 30 Nov. 1900, to Sept. 1901; Oct. 1901, to April, 1902, and May, 1902; operations in Orange River Colony, April to May, 1902; operations on the Zululand Frontier of Natal in Sept. and Oct. 1901 (Queen's Medal with four clasps).
He became Captain 13 Dec. 1906, and took an appointment as a Territorial Force Adjutant 9 April, 1912 with the Northumberland Hussars. Capt. Kennard served in the European War from 1914 to 1916.
He was mentioned in Despatches, and created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 18 Feb. 1915] Willoughby Arthur Kennard, Capt., 13th Hussars.

Captain Willoughby Arthur Kennard was severely wounded, and died in October 1918 of Pneumonia and complications of his injuries.
His death was mentioned in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph on the 3rd February, 1919, but also earlier in the Western Mail 5th November, 1918: "ROLL OF HONOUR - FORMER MONMOUTHSHIRE MAJOR. - Major Willoughby Arthur Kennard, D.S.O., Hussars, who died of bronchial pneumonia following influenza, was the youngest son of the late Mr. H.J. Kennard. He was born in 1881, was educated at Eton, and joined the Monmouthshire Militia in 1899. He obtained his commission in the 13th Hussars in 1900, and served in the South African war (Queen's Medal with for clasps). He was extra A.D.C. to the Commander-in-Chief, India 1910-11, and from 1912 to 1915 served as adjutant to the Northumberland Hussars."
