Action : The Battles of the Lys 

9 April - 29 April 1918. As the first phase of the great German campaign of 1918 lost momentum and failed in its objective to split the British and French armies, subsidiary attacks were shift the balance of the attack and to seek opportunities to exploit other sectors. On the Lys the Germans initially enjoyed spectacular success against a Portuguese Division but the gap was soon plugged and the advance halted.

Enlists 17 Aug 1914 Had been living apart from his wife for two years. Series of sad letters from mother and widow contesting pay/medals etc Wounded in July 1917 Gun Shot Wound to Chest, diagnosed severe at No 1 Southern General Hospital, Rejoined unit (5th Btn) Oct 1916. Promoted to 2/Lt & returned to unit 10 April 1918

John Wilson Kerr was already serving with the Australian Infantry Force as a Sergeant when he was based in Malta and initiated, aged 30, into Wayfarers Lodge No. 1926. No explicit war service is recorded in the contribution ledge, but the final annotation shows that he "Died 28 Apr. 1918," noted a couple of days after the official record.
