The masonic record shows that Charles was resident in Rochester as a Warrant Officer, Royal Navy at the time of initiation in 1917. His contribution records betray no war service in the short time he was a Freemason, the final annotation showing "Died 30th Aug./18." In the 1921 book he is shown as a 2nd Lieutenant, so appears to have transited in early 1917 from the Royal Navy, perhaps to His Majesty's Army.
However, it is proving difficult to find a military link to 2nd Lieutenant Charles King who died on the 30th August. There is only one direct match and that is for a Captain of the R.A.F., who is buried in the naval section of Gillingham Cemetery.
