The records show that Edward was mobilising as a reservist when he died. Although his rank is listed as Sergeant the Soldier's Effect register shows that he was now 8949 Private Edward Frederick Knight of the 1st Battalion, Grenadier Guards.
Probate shows "KNIGHT Edward Frederick of the Bell and Crown in Palace-street Canterbury licensed victualler died 10 August 1914 at Warley Common Hospital Brentwood Essex Administration Canterbury 25 August to Sarah Elizabeth Knight widow. Effects £223 5s. 1d."

At the time of his initiation into Royal Navy Lodge No. 429 at Ramsgate in 1909, Edward is listed as a 34 year old Steward, resident at 55 High St. Margate. His contributions and it is possible Edward is one of, if not the first, non-combat masonic casualties at Home. The contribution record shows that he "Died at Camp, Warley, Essex 9th Aug. 1914."
