Matthew is noted to be an Engineer from North Shields upon initiation in 1907. His name is cited as "McKenzie" in the contribution records, but as "MacKenzie" in the 1921 Book and on the 1933 Scroll. The contribution record shows consolidated payments and no w.s., for war service, but the annotation at the end, "Killed at Sea April 1918." According to the North East Memorials Project, "there is reference to his having received his Grand Lodge Certificate on the 24th January 1910, in Escambia Lodge No. 15 F&AM, Pensacola, Florida". He may have joined that consitution and received a separate certificate from that issued by the United Grand Lodge of England, the date of which is stated to be 31st August 1909, a few weeks after his raising.
