His pre-war career until his volunteering for war service was as a Publisher and resident at 6 Old Bond Street, S.W. London. According to the UK census of 1911, he spent some time as an Assurance Clerk.

The 1921 book - Masonic Roll of Honour - lists BELL as a Private, but his correct rank is 2nd Lieutenant as shown on the probate record. He was also awarded an MBE as recorded in the London Gazette 4th June 1918, "for an act of gallantry not in the presence of the enemy".
