Detail :
In 1914 Edward was serving aboard the "Laconia" as an Engineer, Royal Naval Reserve. His date of death coincides with the sinking of the SS War Monarch.
Several sources and accounts on Wrecksite EU shows that the SS War Monarch, on a voyage from Hull to Italy with a cargo of coal, was sunk by the German submarine UB-57 (Johannes Lohs), 11 miles east of the Royal Sovereign lightvessel. His name appears on the casualty list for this action.

Edward is listed as a 32 year old Engineer resident at Seaforth, Liverpool when initiated into Coronation Lodge No. 2923 in 1917. His masonic service is too short to record any war service, but the final comment against his line in the contribution record shows he "drowned 1/2/1918." This date is at odds with other records showing he died on the 14th February.
