Action : France & Flanders

France & Flanders covers all the dates and corresponding locations which are outside the official battle nomenclature dates on the Western Front. Therefore the actions in which these men died could be considered 'normal' trench duty - the daily attrition losses which were an everyday fact of duty on the Western Front.

Detail :

An article commissioned by the BBC investigating the work of Elgar reports of the discovery in 2009 of a lost set of songs called Fringes of the Fleet. The work was a Kipling inspired morale booster and hugely popular around the music halls. Charles Mott played lead baritone in this venture. His capability is described as "one of the finest singers of his generation".

"Elgar and his wife had no son, but Elgar had grown close to Charles Mott, the lead baritone in the Fringes of the Fleet. In 1917 Mott was called up, and had to miss the Fringes provincial tour. On 22 May 1918 he died of wounds sustained two days earlier in fighting at the Front"

Charles is interred in Grave 2, Plot 11, Row C of Bagneux Military Cemetery, near Doullens in northern France.
