Early Life :

Son of James Anthony and Charlotte C.J. Mugford. There are two versions of his name MUGFORD and MOUNTFORD, which we believe to be the same person.

For some time, General Manager for South America, Norwich Union Mutual Life Society, Buenos Aires: "After a distinguished insurance career in South Africa, he went to Buenos Aires on behalf of the Society in 1910 and successfully established there an important branch of the Society's business, which was extended to Chile with equal success in 1913 under his General Control' (board minutes for 26 April 1918)"

Service Life:

Campaigns:

Unit / Ship / Est.: Royal Scots Fusiliers

Action : France & Flanders

France & Flanders covers all the dates and corresponding locations which are outside the official battle nomenclature dates on the Western Front. Therefore the actions in which these men died could be considered 'normal' trench duty - the daily attrition losses which were an everyday fact of duty on the Western Front.

The masonic record lists him as a 38 year old Insurance Agent resident in Buenos Aires when he is initiated into Victoria Lodge No. 2329 in March 1912. The contribution record shows his war service 1916-1917 which is ended by "Killed in Action April 1918," the news of his death perhaps taking some time to reach Argentina. He was Passed and Raised in Anglo-Colonial Lodge No. 3175, a lodge which he joined a few months after his initiation, in May 1912. He remains a member of this lodge but shown with arrears/absence, but the final annotation is more explicit - "Killed in Action 24th March 1918." Anglo-Colonial Lodge now meet in London.

He further joined Santa Rosa Lodge No. 3579 in Buenos Aires, 1913, not long after its consecration. Again his war service is recorded, but his date of death is recorded "Killed in Action 24th July 1918."
