Early Life :
Edwin Bennett Brierley Newton was born in Chester in 1873, receiving his early education in Eccles before matriculating at the University of London in 1890. An engineer by profession, he received his training in Manchester and Carlisle, and was elected a Fellow of the Society in 1897. In 1898 he entered the service of the Metropolitan Borough of Paddington, and was promoted to Borough Surveyor in 1901, being at that time one of the youngest engineers to hold so important a position in the municipal world.Service Life:

21 March - 4 July 1918. The Battles of the Somme in 1918 were mostly concerned with stemming the German advance which started in March 1918 and which made considerable gains in the Somme/Arras sector. Utilising surplus troops which had become available following the surrender of Russia after the October Revolution, the Germans gambled on a massive campaign that could win the war in the west before the USA could bring its resources to bear. Initial gains were in places spectacular but eventually dogged resistance coupled with supply problems and sheer exhaustion closed down the battle. Other attacks were launched along the front to probe the Allied defences but the same pattern of initial gains followed by stalemate prevailed. British casualties were almost 345,000.

He joined the Army in April 1915 with a commission in the Glamorgan Fortress Engineers. At the end of 1916 he went to France as Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers (134 Army Troops Company), and survived until 1918, when he was reported missing. Newton was eventually recorded as 'killed in action' on 10 April 1918, at Armentières, at the age of 45 years.

He was initiated into Bective Lodge No. 1532 listed as a 22 year old Surveyor, resident at Aglionby Street, Carlisle. He further joined The Aedile Lodge No. 3281 as a petitioner in 1907 at its consecration. He was its first Senior Warden. His war service is noted followed by "Died on Service Octr 1918."
