Detail :
Enlisted, aged 18 into the Scottish Rifles in the second half of 1883. 789, Private Oakley. By 1890 he was medically discharged. He must have been a member of the 1st Battalion as he was discharged whilst at Cork, Ireland.

At the outbreak of the Great War he re-enlisted and became 204873 Driver Alfred Edward Oakley of the Royal Field Artillery, serving with the 95th Brigade.
He was evidently wounded to the point of not being fit for military service, receiving the Silver War Badge 11th December, 1915.
