Mike: http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=100714&hl=Submarine+H3 the british H-class H 1 to H 4 and also some french and off course italian submarines based on Brindisi made regular visits OFF the Bocche di Cattaro (bights of Cattaro, Kotor today), the main austrian base in the southern Adriatic. H 3 under command of Lieutenant George E. Jenkinson left Brindisi on 14.07.1916 at 08:30h for one of those patrols. On 15.07.1916 at 13:27h the austrian signals-station at Spitze d'Ostro (d'Ostro Point, entrance to Cattaro) heard an detonation some miles off. Some boats send there found patches of diesel oil, some pieces of wreckage and parts of an torpedo. Also the french submarine FARADAY heard an explosion that time. That must have been H 3 hitting an austrian defensive mine. There were no survivors of the crew of 22 men. |
