Detail :
Penrith Observer 16 January 1917 "Private Walter Ousby, Border Regiment, eldest son of Mr. J. Ousby, Graham Street, Penrith, was reported by telegram on Thursday to be seriously ill in France, suffering from pneumonia. The messages did not give much hope of his recovery, and on Saturday a further telegram reported his death. Pvt. Ousby was a master tailor, and single. He joined after his case had been before the Tribunal, and was sent to France after an unusually short training. He was extremely popular in Penrith. He was a member of the Penrith Conservative Club, and a keen bowler and tennis player. He took a prominent part in the promotion of many socials, &c., in Penrith, and his genial manner made him very popular with whom he came in contact. He was a Freemason."
Penrith Observer 23 January 1917 "At the weekly drill of the Penrith V.A.D., on Tuesday night, reference was made to the death of Private Walter Ousby, Graham Street, as reported in last week's "Observer." Private Ousby was a member of the corps, and a vote of condolence to the relatives was passed on the motion of Act.-Commandant Kirkpatrick, seconded by Quarter-Master Armstrong."
