France & Flanders covers all the dates and corresponding locations which are outside the official battle nomenclature dates on the Western Front. Therefore the actions in which these men died could be considered 'normal' trench duty - the daily attrition losses which were an everyday fact of duty on the Western Front.

40650 Private William Richmond Roy Palmer, 8th (Service) Battalion Yorks & Lancaster Regiment. Killed in Action 9th April, 1917. Formerly 188003, Royal Field Artillery.
In 1917 the 8th (Service) Battalion, York & Lancaster Regiment fought in The Battle of Messines, The Battles of the Menin Road, Polygon Wood and the The First and Second Battles of Passchendaele. In November 1917 the Division moved to Italy. He was more than likely killed in the events leading to the firing of the explosives under Hill 60 & the Battle of Messines.
He has no known grave, but is commemorated at the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial on panels 36 & 55.

Listed as a 23 year old manager from Egremont in 1916, at the time of initiation. He advanced no further than that of Entered Apprentice, as his time in Egremont Lodge was short-lived. The final comment in his contribution record is that he was "Killed in action (France) April 9, 1917."
