Presumed drowned on the 23rd October, 1916. His body has no known grave and he is, therefore, commemorated on the Mercantile Marine Memorial at Tower Hill.
The date of his presumed drowning corresponds with an action on the SS Clearwater by U-55, captained by Wilhelm Werner, where the ship was sunk off Flannan Island, Outer Hebrides. She was en route from Invergordon to Hampshire Roads, U.S.A. The cost was 36 casualties (all hands). See more at: Wrecksite EU.
