Natural causes is attributed those deaths due to causes that were not directly associated with the war. Included in this are wartime deaths resulting from, for example, theSpanish Influenza pandemic and its associated pneumonia problems and other attributions such as age and exhaustion. It also groups those who through Post Traumatic Stress committed suicide as a result of their experiences.

Attested for services on the 22nd November, 1915 and became 1386 Private John George Pate, Army Service Corps (Motor Transport) in the Army Reserve. by the 3rd March, 1916 he had transferred to become a Sapper of the Royal Engineers, completing the process by 16th December, 1916. At the time of his death he was part of the 66th Battalion, Training Reserve as TR4/37022. He did not serve abroad.
On the 31st January, 1917 according to his military record, he died at Fazackerley Hospital.

John was a 30 year old Licensed Victualler, residing in Anfield at the time of his initiation in 1911. In the 1921 book, his initials are reversed to G.J. The contribution record shows that he "Resd 31st Jan 1917," but he actually died at Fazackerley Hospital on that date. Steward
