The contribution records of the Northern Nigeria Lodge are clear in the fact that William was a Master Mariner based in Lagos in 1912. It is less clear what happened to him whilst he was there: There appears to be full contributions until 1921 and a note across the FC and MM date column Note "(1912) still as EA 19/4/1924". So this would prove that he did not directly lose his life as a consequence of war or latterly in the immediate aftermath as a wounded casualty. Having been listed as an entry in the 1921 book, it seems likely at this point of investigation that his entry is a mistake. That he is not listed on the 1933 roll, perhaps reads as an acknowledgement of that.
