In the publication In Proud and Honoured Memory: In memory of the valiant sons of Whitchurch ... by Ceri Stennett and Gwyn Prescott, the following is recorded about William:
"Chief Engineer William George Pearn, S.S. M.J. Hedley, Mercantile marine, died of wounds from enemy action at sea, aged 47, on 04/05/1918. He was the husband of Robina Pearn of Beatrice Road, Whitchurch, formerly of 87 Claude Road, Roath, Cardiff. In 1911 she was living at 83 Llanishen Street, Heath, Cardiff. his ship was carrying sulphur phosphate from Runcorn to Cork, when she was attacked in the Irish Sea by gunfire from a German submarine nine miles from Holyhead. The crew was rescued but William Pearn had been mortally wounded while working the ship's engines trying to keep her afloat. He died a few hours after being landed and is buried in Holyhead (Maeshyfryd) Cemetery, Anglesey."
For his service he was awarded the British War and Mercantile Marine Medals.
