Mike: On 24th April 1917 his ship was torpedoed by a German U-boat and sank about 150 miles from Bishop Rock, Scilly Isles, south west of England. The Master and eight crewmen lost their lives. One of 79 ships sunk Total tonnage 213,987 tons by U-53 |

Wrecksite EU: SS Ferndene, built by Northumberland SB. Co. Ltd., Newcastle in 1899 and owned at the time of her loss by Dene Steam Shipping Co. Ltd. (J. T. Lunn & Co.), Newcastle, was a British steamer of 3770 tons. On April 24th, 1917, Ferndene, on a voyage from Table Bay to London with a cargo of graphite & meal, was sunk by the German submarine U-53 (Hans Rose), 150 miles west of Bishop Rock. 9 persons were lost.
