Early Life :
When John Penney was born in July 1878, his father, John, was 32 and his mother, Jane, was 30. He married Mary Ann Harrison on 20 May 1899. He had two brothers and two sisters. He married Mary Ann Harrison at Easington Lane, P.M. Chapel, on 20th May, 1899 when he was 20 years old.Service Life:

Detail :
Enlisted 25th November, 1915 as a Private 95110, but became 201997, Gunner John Penney, Royal Garrison Artillery. He spent time, initially at the No. 4 Depot of the R.G.A. as a Gunner, but was posted to 186th Howitzer Battery 19th July 1916. At the beginning of 1917 he transferred to 466 Howitzer Battery for four months and then 385th Battery, finishing his service with the 186th Battery again for the last part of his service.
He was discharged 1st September, 1917 having become physically unfit for military service.

In his short time in the lodge he pays his dues and shows no explicit war service in the contribution record, which is closed out with the note: "Died 6 Feb.1919."
