Accidents were a minor factor in the casualty list. Our definition is deaths resulting from activities that were not directly associated with 'active service'. We have excluded Naval Accidents which are seperately identified because of their numbers and impact. Many accidents involved the aviators, operating at the the limits of technology.
Detail :
The notice of his death appeared in the Shields Daily News 22nd April, 1919: "PERRY. - Accidentally drowned at Sunderland on the 16th inst., John James Perry, aged 42 years, of 42 West Percy Street, North Shields. Interment at Peston Cemetery, cortege leaving the New Quay, North Shields, Wednesday, 3 o'clock. Friends please accept this (the only) intimation."
According to the North East War Memorials Project, in 1911 John's address was a shop and boarding house run by Cathering Strong. The coroner's report suggest that he lost his way at Sunderland South Dock and fell into the water.

Listed as a 34 year old Master Mariner of 42 West Percy Street, North Shields. The contribution record shows no explicit war service, but it does show "Drowned 16th May 1919," which is a month out from the official record.
