Alleyn's Alumni "Herbert Stanley Plant Lieutenant, Royal Engineers. Herbert Stanley Plant was a student at Alleyn’s until 1899 and joined the British Army shortly after leaving school. He served during the South African War and decided to continue his service when the First World War broke out in August 1914. Herbert served as a Lieutenant with the Royal Engineers and saw action in France before becoming ill with pneumonia in 1918. He later died on service on February 18th 1918. He is buried at Bucqoy Road Cemetery, Ficheux."
A column in a magazine "South Africa - Weekly Journal Jan-Mar 1918", 2 March 1918, titled Domestic Announcements: Deaths: PLANT-On February 18 abroad, of pneumonia, Herbert Stanley Plant, Second-Lieutenant, Royal Engineers, son of William David Plant. Also recorded in Norwood News 1st March 1918 "PLANT. - On the 18th February, abroad, of pneumonia, Herbert Stanley Plant, 2nd Lieut., R.E., beloved son of William Plant, of Anerley."

In the register of the Lodge at the United Grand Lodge of England, Herbert is shown employed as a Mine Owner, resident at 98 Leadenhall Street, E.C., London, at the time of his initiation. His Grand Lodge Certificate was dated 13th November 1911 (with an annotation that his "2d 3rd 16.5.17", taken to mean his latter degree dates were questioned or confirmed) The contribution columns show w.s. [war service] before an overwritten semi-legible comment of "Died on Active Service [...] 1918." He is commemorated on both the 1921 and 1933 Roll of Honour workings.
