B Company, 14th Battalion, London Scottish. Service No. 511051. Sergeant John James Porter.
Grantham Journal of 5th October 1918. "The death has occurred in action of Sergt. John James Porter, London Scottish, eldest son of the late Mr. J H Porter and of Mrs Porter, 33, High Street. Educated at the Grantham National School, under Mr R N Rooksby, and afterward at the Grantham Grammar School, the deceased decided to enter the teaching profession. He was trained at Battersea College, and for some time taught at Hornsey, London. Then he was appointed head-master of St John's School, Holbeach, and for six years prior to enlisting he occupied a similar position at Gosberton Clough, Spalding. He joined the Army in February, 1915, and had seen service in France, Salonika, Egypt and Palestine. He returned to France as recently as July 1st this year. Aged 36, Sergt. Porter leaves a widow, but no children. His wife has received a letter from Second-Lieut. Edgar, enclosing the following from Brigade routine orders, dated Sept. 5th, 1918, which refers to the gallant deeds of a number of men, including Sergt. Porter:- "The Brigadier-General commanding the Infantry Brigade desires to draw the attention of all ranks to the exceptional gallantry shown by the under mentioned N.C.O's and men (names given) of the ----Battalion, London Regiment (London Scottish), all of whom, in the operations of August 21st, 1918, forced their way well beyond the objective, in many cases quite 400 yards. Unfortunately, these men made the supreme sacrifice in their splendid effort, but the memory of their deed will live and add still further to the traditions already established by the Battalion.""
