He was born in Bournemouth, Hampshire circa 1888, the apparent son of Fleet Surgeon W.M. Power, R.N.

In the 1911 he is living at 32 Harsnett Road, Colchester as a Boarder at the residence of Sarah Brook, a Head Teacher for Colchester Borough Council. This is who is granted probate, so maybe this suggests either debt or romantic involvement.

Probate record shows: POWER, William Goodlake of Colchester. Temporary Inspector of Ordnance Machinery, Second Class and Honorary Captain, Army Ordnance Department. Died 16th October 1916 in France. Probate granted at Ipswich to Sarah Brook, spinster. Effects £254 14s 5d.

Joined the army as a Private but was commissioned with the Army Ordnance Depot, Royal Army Ordnance Corps. A London Gazette entry appears that "Private William Goodlake Power (from Army Ordnance Corps, New Armies) to be temporary Inspector of Ordnance Machinery, 3rd Class with the honorary rank of Lieutenant", dated 25th February 1915.

He was awarded the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

His records are stored at the National Archives under reference WO 339/74298
