During the war there were a number of Naval Accidents which we have isolated because of their shocking caualties and the corresponding impact on members of the craft. There were a number of vessels destroyed in port by explosions which we would today categorise as 'Health & Safety' failures.

Alfred Frank Prettyman was the son of James Edward Prettyman (1842-1917) and Elizabeth Maria Sarah (1851-1928) He was the husband of Jessie Beatrice Daw of Greenspond, Newfoundland Canada. Alfred was just 43 years old at the time of his death leaving behind a wife and a daughter who was just 17 years of age. Jessie and their young daughter Alice Margaret "Maggie," returned to Newfoundland after the passing of their loving husband and father.
Alfred was a master mariner and he was lost at Dolman Point. He was Master of the schooner, Katie Cluett 1915-1917. She missed stays and drove ashore on the Dodman while bound from Falmouth to Pentewan in ballast. She broke up in heavy seas, but the captain was drowned before he could reach the rocks."
Although this action may not appear war related, on the 6th May, 1917 the SS Katie Cluett was attacked 28 NW by N of Dieppe, carrying flints to Runcorn. During the war mercantile marine were in constant danger of action.
His gravestone is adorned with a masonic emblem, the square and compasses together with the inscription:
"In Loving Memory of
My Dearly Beloved Husband
ALFRED FRANK PRETTYMAN
Who was drowned Dec. 22nd, 1917
At the Dodman when the S/[.] Katie Cluett
was wrecked
Aged 43 Years
In The Mist Of Life, We Are In Death
Thy Will Be Done O Lord. "

Listed as a 31 year old Mariner, Alfred was resident at Porthpeua Road, St. Austell at the time of initiation in 1906. The contribution register shows that he was "Deceased 22nd Dec 1917."
