Early Life :
Edward was born at Calstock, Tavistock, Cornwall c. 1888, eldest son of Robert Rice and Mary Ellen Alford. He had four siblings: Stanley Parken (b.1890), Elizabeth Frederika (b.1893), Audrey Irene (b.1894) and Ethel Mary (b.1899). He appears on the 1891 and 1901 census where his father is noted as a Railway Clerk (Accountant).By 1911, at the time of the UK census he was resident as a boarder in the home of Samuel and Charlotte Cobbledick. He was 22 and one of three boarders, two of which, including him, were noted to be Elementary School Teachers for Hendon District Council.
Edward was based at Wendover Camp at the time of his marriage to Marion Elizabeth Hearn on 8th April, 1916 at the Parish Church, Hendon. She was the daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Hearn. They had a child soon after: Frederick Robert b.31st March 1917 d. December 2004. Born in Hendon Oxfordshire. Edward is noted to be a Captain of the 2nd Bedfordshires as well as a Teacher.

Captain Edward Nicholas Alford, 4th or 7th Essex Regiment (Territorial Force) attached to the Bedfordshire Regiment at the time of his death.
Served in India and died 1919 and is buried in the Karachi Cemetery.
For his service in the Great War he was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He is commemorated on the Hendon War Memorial, the roll of Birkbeck College, as part of the University of London and by Bedford Borough Council.
