Unit / Ship / Est.: HMS Clacton |
Action : Naval Campaign |
Naval Campaign is defined as to include all sea operations where attrition rates are in ones and twos and which do not fall within specific naval battles such as Jutland, Coronel, Falklands etc. This includes Merchant Navy losses.
Detail :
Index Chatham Naval Memorial reads "Mortimore Engr.-Lieut. Francis Edwin R.N.R. HMS "Clacton". Killed in action with enemy submarine in Mediterranean 3rd August 1916." HMS "Clacton" was a minesweeper torpedoed by a German submarine at Chai Aghizi in the Levant.

Francis is not included in the 1921 Book or the Scroll and perhaps this is because of an error. An entry exists against Star in the East for an unregistered "Frederick Mortimer" and it is possible that incorrect details have been recorded. For Francis, his record shows in the register at United Grand Lodge "Died 3/8/1916 in arrears"
