Born 1895, son of William Mortimer and Elizabeth Ann Rhind.Attended Brompton Choir Elementary School and Sloane Secondary School (today Pimlico Comprehensive School).

Moved on mobilisation to St Albans area. 10 March 1915 : landed at Le Havre. 11 May 1915 : formation became 141st Brigade in 47th (2nd London) Division. |

Detail :
590439 Rifleman of the 18th (County of London) Battalion (London Irish Rifles). Enlisted almost immediately on the 10th August, 1914 at the Duke of York's Headquarters, Chelsea aged 19. An entry on the medal roll shows his service between 9th March, 1915 to 25th February, 1916, which is confirmed by his service record. By November, 1916 Hugh is transferred to the Reserve, principally because he was wounded in action 25th September, 1915 having received a gun shot wound to his left foot.
Probate RHIND Hugh Mortimer of 252 Fulham-road Middlesex died 8 February 1912 at the Colindale Hospital Hendon Middlesex Administration (limited) London 1 July to Alexander George Rhind builder. Effects £94 12s. 4d.
It is uncertain of the reason why he died young, whether from those wounds received in action or due to the Spanish Influenza pandemic, rife at the time.

In 1919 at the time of his initiation into Neleus Lodge No. 3062, Hugh was a listed a 24 year old Electrical Engineer of Fulham Road, London SW. His contribution record shows no war service but is closed out with the comment "Died 8/2/21." His death would have been too late for inclusion into the original working of the Masonic Roll of Honour, but is included as a Corporal upon the 1940 scroll.
