Mike: torpedoed by U57 on the 22 or 23 October 1916 As for the U-57, she sunk fifty five ships for a total of 91,680 tons and one warship, HMS Genista, at 1,250 tons. Her greatest success was the sinking of the British vessel Rovanmore, at 10,320 tons, in October 1916. The submarine survived the war and was scrapped in Cherbourg in 1921. |

BLAMPEY. JOHN CHARLES RICHARD, Artificer Engineer, Royal Navy. Only son of the late John Blampey of Plymouth. Born Devonport, Devon, 22 July.1881; educated at Public High School. Stoke; served an apprenticeship as an Engine Fitter in Devonport Dockyard: joined the Royal Navy as Engine Room Artificer 10 Nov. 1902, and obtained Warrant Rank 1 Jan. 1912.: was serving on board H.M.S. Argyll when she was wrecked off the coast of Scotland 29 Oct. 1915. all hands being saved ; appointed Engineer in Charge to H.M.S. Genista. mine-sweeper. April. 1916, and was killed in action in that vessel while engaged with German submarine U-57 off the coast of Ireland 23 Oct. following. He was married with a young daughter.
