12th (Service) Battalion (Teesside Pioneers) Formed in Middlesbrough on 21 December 1914 by the Mayor and Town. Moved initially to Gosforth and in August 1915 to Cannock Chase. Adopted by War Office on 27 August 1915. Moved in September 1915 to Badajoz Barracks at Aldershot and converted to a Pioneer Battalion, attached to 40th Division. 2 June 1916 : landed at Boulogne. 5 May 1918 : reduced to cadre strength. 28 June 1918 : cadre transferred to 17th Bn, the Worcestershire Regiment. |

9 April - 29 April 1918. As the first phase of the great German campaign of 1918 lost momentum and failed in its objective to split the British and French armies, subsidiary attacks were shift the balance of the attack and to seek opportunities to exploit other sectors. On the Lys the Germans initially enjoyed spectacular success against a Portuguese Division but the gap was soon plugged and the advance halted.

NEWCASTLE JOURNAL - 16th April 1918 - "Information has been received that three members of the South Shields Police Force have been wounded, viz.: Constable T.E. Bloom, company sergeant-major in a Yorkshire regiment; and Constables James Tierney and Thos. Cartner, both gunners in the R.G.A."
He is buried at La Kreule Military Cemetery, Hazebrook. His headstone reads:

12th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 27253 DLI. Husband of Mary Jane Bloom of 28, Barnes Road, South Shields, Durham. Killed 12 April 1918. Aged 43.
Born Newcastle-on-Tyne, Enlisted Newcastle-on-Tyne, Resided South Shields.

The regimental badge on his headstone is, rather oddly, that of the DLI, - his former regiment.

Military rank in the records of the Lodge at the United Grand Lodge of England show rank as "Regimental Sergeant Major" and though a Freemason only a short time of service, "Killed in action 1918".
