Early Life :

First son, seventh child of Thomas John, Timber Merchant, and Amy Saul, resident at Waveney House, 10 Euston Road, Great Yarmouth (1881-1911).

Action : The Final Advance in Picardy 

17 October - 11 November 1918. The final stage of the British advance saw them cross the Selle and the Sambre rivers as the relentless pressure was kept on the retreating Germans. By the 11th November 1918 the British army had returned to Mons, where it all started for them back in August 1914 when it made its first contact with the Germans, and where the war stopped when the Armistice was declared on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

Herbert's Military record is summarised on his medal card. He was a Private in the 5th Battalion Norfolk Regiment, before becoming a Sergeant, initially with the 17th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment and then latterly with the 10th Battalion, Rifle Brigade. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. At the time of his death he was serving with the 7th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment.

Records point to his service being with the 7th Suffolks - its war diary shows that they during that week "Individual Training" was being conducted.

Probate SAUL Herbert Lepard of Balmoor House Peterhead Aberdeenshire died 24 October 1918 in France Probate London 25 April to Thomas Park Burnett herring curer and exporter. Effects £914 18s. 8d.

For his service he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

His death was recorded at a meeting of his Lodge on the 21st November 1918 where "?Brethren stood in silent tribute to the memory of Herbert Saul." He was "killed in action" during the Battle of Selle on the 24th October 1918. Recorded as a 2nd Lieutenant, resident at Great Yarmouth at the time of membership of Lodge of Friendship.
