SS Dulwich, built by Dublin Dockyard Co. Ltd., Dublin in 1916 and owned at the time of her loss by South Metropolitan Gas Company, London, was a British steamer of 1.460 tons. On June 10th, 1917, Dulwich, on a voyage from Seaham to London with a cargo of coal, was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UB-12 (Ernst Steindorff), 7 miles North-east of the Shipwash lightvessel. 5 crew were lost.

Masonic record shows "Drowned 12 Jun 1917". CWGC show date of death as 10 June 1917 and that as a 1st Engineer aboard the S.S. Dulwich, he was killed by mine, contradicted by a newspaper report which shows :
Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette 21 June 1917 - SAYERS. Lost his life on his ship in the 10th inst., by a torpedo. Chief Engineer, Charley Sayers, beloved broter of Mary Jane Sayers, 46 Bramwell Street. Deeply mourned."
