23rd (Service) Battalion (1st Sportsman's) Formed at the Hotel Cecil in the Strand, London, on 25 September 1914 by Mrs E.Cunliffe-Owen. Initially known as the "Hard as Nails Battalion". Moved to Hornchurch in Essex. June 1915 : came under command of 99th Brigade, 33rd Division. Landed at Boulogne in November 1915. 25 November 1915 : transferred with Brigade to 2nd Division. |

11 January - 13 March 1917. Operations on the Ancre concerned the gradual advance in the area around Miramont during which the Germans retired towards the Hindenburg Line defences.

Boston Guardian 31st March 1917 "The news has been received that Mr. B. Sears, 23rd Fusiliers, only son of Mrs. W. W. Grigg, of Boston, was killed in action on February 17th. Mr. Sears, who was a pupil of Dr. Hopewell Smith, formerly of Boston was in practice as a dentist at Norwich. He leaves a widow, but no family."
Commemorated at the Boston Grammar School, and at the Boston Holy Trinity, Spilsby Road and alos at the Boston WW1 Centenary Obelisk memorial.
