Action : The Battles of the Lys |
9 April - 29 April 1918. As the first phase of the great German campaign of 1918 lost momentum and failed in its objective to split the British and French armies, subsidiary attacks were shift the balance of the attack and to seek opportunities to exploit other sectors. On the Lys the Germans initially enjoyed spectacular success against a Portuguese Division but the gap was soon plugged and the advance halted.
Detail :
43532, Corporal Arthur Clarence Sluman, 10th Battalion Worcester Regiment. Killed in action 10th April, 1918.
On this day the German OP GEORGETTE Offensive (which had begun the previous day) hit 10th Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment in their positions just east of the Messines Ridge between the Rivers Wambeek and Douve. The barrage started at 0530 hrs and the 'sturmtruppe' attacked 30 minutes later. 10th Worcestershisres were overwhelmed and, during the day, conducted a confused fighting withdrawal over the Messines Ridge. In the course of the day the battalion suffered 378 casualties of which 16 were Killed in Action, 75 were Wounded and 287 were missing. As SLUMAN is commemorated on the wall of the Tyne Cot memorial we may assume he was amongst the latter. During the day a number of men from 10th (never subsequently identified) conducted a heroic last stand around the guns of A Battery, 88th Brigade RFA on top of the ridge which inflicted a significant delay on the advancing Germans. The Battery Commander, Capt E.S. Dougall, was awarded a posthumous VC for this action.
