Early Life :
Born about December 1879 at Walworth, Surrey son of Richard and Fanny Smith. He married Edith Canfild at Walthamstow about June 1905 and lived at 13 Arlington Road, Teddington in 1918.Service Life:

Detail :
S/3583 Sub-Conductor, Army Ordnance Corps. He embarked to France on the 15th August, 1914 and undoubtedly was present at the opening shots and retreat from Mons. Commissioned to Captain, Army Ordnance Corps where in 1915 he became the Assistant Commissary of Ordnance holding that post for at least three years. Served in the British Army for over 21 years.
He died at the Gerstley-Hoare Hospital for Officers, Chelsea on 28th August 1918 and is buried at Teddington Cemetery on 3rd September, 1918 (Plot. CC Grave B3.612).
Probate SMITH Richard Alfred of 13 Arlington-road Teddington Middlesex died 28 August 1918 at 53 Cadogan-square Chelsea Administration (with Will) London 9 December to Edith Smith widow. Effects £193 9s. 4d.

The contribution record of the Duke of Normandy Lodge shows that Richard joined the English Constitution from "Egypt Gd Lo." (Egypt Grand Lodge?, on the 17th June, 1910. No explicit war service is recorded for him, despite being a Staff Sergeant at the time in the Army Ordnance Corps. The final note is that he "Died 28th Sept 1918." That date is a month out from other records.
